Muybridge's Strings

(C) 2011 National Film Board of Canada / NHK / Polygon Pictures
2011 /12 min. 39sec./ 35 mm /No dialogue /Canada, Japan
Techniques: Drawing and painting on paper

A CO-PRODUCTION OF THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA, NHK AND POLYGON PICTURES
Direction, Script, Editing Koji Yamamura
Original Music, Sound Design Normand Roger, Pierre Yves Drapeau, Denis Chartrand
Executive Producers David Verrall (NFB), Kenji Saito (NHK), Shuzo John Shiota (Polygon)
Producers Michael Fukushima (NFB), Keisuke Tsuchihashi (NHK), Shuzo John Shiota (Polygon)

Can time be made to stand still? Can it be reversed? Koji Yamamura's Muybridge's Strings is a meditation on this theme, contrasting the worlds of the photographer Eadweard Muybridge -- who in 1878 successfully photographed consecu- tive phases in the movement of a galloping horse -- and a mother who, watching her daughter grow up, realizes she is slipping away from her. Moving between California and Tokyo, between the nineteenth century and the twenty-first, the film focuses on some of the high points in Muybridge's troubled life and intercuts them with the mother's surrealistic daydreams -- a poetic clash that explores the irrepressible human desire to seize life's fleeting moments, to freeze the instants of happiness. Enriched by Koji Yamamura's refined artistry and Normand Roger's soundtrack, Muybridge's Strings observes the ties that cease to bind, fixes its gaze on the course of life, and presents a moment in time suspended on the crystalline notes of a canon by J.S. Bach.

We wish to honour master artist Koji Yamamura for his exquisite philosophical meditation on time and our attempts to capture it. Riffing on Eadweard Muybridge's consecutive photographs of horses, he contrasts them with a 21st century mother watching her daughter grow up and move away. One of the most perfect films we have seen.

A child whose head is numerals, a child who winds his own face and has it under his arm. What was left is his identity, a child whose eyes are provided by fishes, a child who lies down on the floor and head-butts his identity, a child who cannot say anything because of a zipper across his mouth. He undo the zipper but under it is another zipper...
Ecology and philosophy of  children with sadness and humour.

The Old Crocodile
The Old Crocodile (Toshi wo totta Wani) / 2005 /13'00"/ 35mm, Hi vision /Vista size, 16:9 / DOLBY Degital
English dialogue / English dialogue with French subtitles / Japanese dialogue
Original story and Illustrations by Leopold Chauveau
Based on
‘Histoire du Vieux Crocodile’
Fukuinkan Shoten Publishers, Inc.
Text & illustrations Le’opold Chauveau 1923
Japanese text Yukoh Deguchi 1986
Narrated by Peter Barakan
Direction, Editing, Production: Koji Yamamura
An animated film modeling Leopold Chauveau’s fantasy ‘Histoire du Vieux Crocodile’. Chauveau’s unique sarcasm sharply chisels in closer on the question of love and power, especially in this chaotic world of now. Truthfully following Chauveau’s illustration, every scene is simple and stoiccally depicted by mostly monochromatic lines and paint fields.
Directed and animated by Academy award nominated artist Koji Yamamura, and voiced by Peter Barakan’s kind and cool narration, this film is finished as a long-lasting work, letting the audience laugh, sometimes weep, sense a subtle nuances of feeling, and always want to come back to see again.
Articles:
"The acting and camerawork are up to Yamamura's usual fluid standard, and, at 13 minutes, it's much too short."

“If you want or need an antidote to the often predictable formulas of Hollywood studios’ animated fare, look no further than Koji Yamamura’s pencil-drawn film The Old Crocodile.”
