There once existed a small, beautiful woodland known as the "Old Forest." Colonel Procolo, having inherited the woods, lays his hands upon a great fir tree—a tree said to be the dwelling place of a fairy—and plots to do away with his nephew, whom he views as an obstacle. Yet, through his strange encounters with the inhabitants of the Old Forest—such as Matteo the Wind and Bernardo the tree spirit—the truth of the human heart is laid bare. This is the long-awaited first Japanese translation of Dino Buzzati’s second major work.
