Introducing the "Kodan Picture Book" series, supervised by the immensely popular storyteller Matsunojo Kanda—a performer whose shows are so sought-after that tickets are nearly impossible to secure!
"Kodan" is a traditional Japanese performing art. A *kodanshi* (storyteller) recounts tales based on real historical figures or events, weaving in dramatic flair to entertain the audience through a solo, spoken-word performance. It is a vital art form—currently enjoying a major resurgence—that serves to pass down stories from Japanese history to the next generation. We created the "Kodan Picture Book" series to preserve these classic tales for children and ensure they are handed down to the future.
With the meteoric Matsunojo Kanda serving as supervisor, this series is guaranteed to be the talk of the town!
From Kodansha comes the "Kodan Picture Book" series, featuring the tale of the poet Saigyo and "Tsuzumi-ga-taki" (The Drum Waterfall)! This project, part of Kodansha’s 110th-anniversary celebrations, is supervised by the renowned storyteller Matsunojo Kanda. The text—based on a *kodan* story about the young poet Saigyo’s travels—is written by the highly popular children’s author Yoji Ishizaki, while the illustrations are provided by Koji Yamamura, one of today’s most acclaimed animation artists and picture book creators. This is a picture book perfect for reading aloud!
