A man who was looking for the shortest thing in Tokyo uttered the word "da" at the last moment of his life.
This work, produced as the first installment of the "Bungaku Bideo" collaboration project between contemporary Japanese literature and animation, is a recitation of "Totemo mijikai," an original work by Hideo Furukawa, by the author himself, and Koji Yamamura handled the animation.
Review (2)
...What Furukawa shows by postponing meaning and animation by deconstructing the elements of language is that the conditions for the existence of language are uncertain to begin with, and that even in the midst of that uncertainty, there are forms and gestures that can just barely emerge. ...
Media Arts Current Content | Transcending the Existing World: Furukawa Hideo and Animation | Nomura Takaaki | 2024.10.23 | Japan
...Extremely short indeed, since this animated vignette lasts just 5 minutes, including the credits. Yet it's the whole of existence that bubbles up in this jolt that's both primitive and surreal. Japan's Kōji Yamamura has created an astonishing film whose tension is as insane as it is existential.

A whole life in a single syllable. In a jazzy trip through Tokyo, a person searches for the briefest of things, grows and struggles, and finds "there" in their last breath: totality in concision, a parable of life. Image, text, and voice jam in harmony-organic, minimalist, palpable. The ZEBRA Award for the best poetry film goes to Extremely Short by Koji Yamamura with a poem by Furukawa Hideo.

The judges felt that music was orchestrated as a performance on the screen, where the animation and music are apart and soon become unified. Both poetic and transformative, each note brings forth a new energy, as the viewer is drawn into the musical realm of life, death and beyond. The music creates a richness to the animation, a highly compelling, lyrical narrative alongside the dancing, swirling and floating visuals. The music and animation are intertwined, increasing in intensity, drawing you into the beauty of the work, and it’s musical realm before lifting us out and slowly coming to a halt.
